D4L: Let's Keep Both Feet On The Ground From Now On

No disrepect, but am I only the only one who's tired of seeing Fabo from D4L kick his damn leg up sideways or what. Don't get me wrong, I do respect D4L musically because they did their thing this year no doubt, but that leg kick I'm just not feelin'.

They say they're from the different projects of the "A" but I can't even see brothers in Grady Homes catching on doing the high kick. I just can't see it. Although I did see Heather Hunter do a trick like that in a porno before.

But I guess some would argue that that's Hip Hop, keeping it real with originality. But this one here is taking it to the extreme, plus it's on some wack shhh.

what

Posted by: whateva at December 14, 2005 11:47 AM

to my ppl in tha Dirty South!!!! (only cause I grew up here, Stay on top of these charts cause y’all are doin’ it. The movement has been so successful that now in the South, an '84 Caprice goes for the same price as an '02 ES 300 LOL. Be careful though. New York is already about to copy some of the style. I was reading an article about Lil’ Cease of Junior M.A.F.I.A. coming out with a genre called “Riot Music”. He says he wants NY to have a music like crunk. As quick as the East Coast critics dismiss people like Lil’ Scrappy, Cease will become a genius in his new copycat genre. The Diplomats already came out with the song “Crunk Muzick”. Couldn’t believe my ears!!! Anyway don’t worry that NY critics don’t take our hip-hop seriously. They keep saying how we’ll fall off like they tried to do with the West Coast and kind of succeeded in their quest. I’ll tell you why it won’t happen.
First of all, when the West Coast began its decline, it wasn’t necessarily all of NY’s doing like they want to make you believe. The West Coast didn’t diversify enough. The majority of their music was coming off of two record labels. Ruthless and Death Row. When Suge went to prison, Tupac died, and Dr. Dre and Snoop left, half of the West Coast was gone. Ruthless suffered with Eazy-E dying and that is that. We are different. Artists from the South who could never get major label attention anyway, did their own thing on independent labels. That is why the independent label is so ingrained in Southern hip-hop (please check out my link to all the underground cd’s and DVD’s from the Oomp Camp website on my homepage). The most a record label can get out of a Southern rapper is a distribution deal. Southern rappers don’t sell their souls for 60 cents an album like rappers from NY do. The legacy of slavery in the South has blacks down here very wary of working hard to make other people rich. Artists down here will sell out of their trunks (listen to Nas’ “God’s Son” on the first track) for 8 dollars a pop and keep all the money.
Rappers in the South make more money per rapper than rappers in NY on average. Why do you think the South has taken over 106 and Park? They need to change the name of the show to Peachtree Street, Bourbon Street, or Beale Street because that’s all you see on there now. Southern rappers have more of a budget to make videos because all of their money belongs to them and not a record label. The West Coast also fell off because the South was a big market for West Coast music. As our radio stations started playing more of our own songs, we weren’t listening to as much West Coast anymore and now I miss it. We also won’t fall off because of pure numbers. The majority of blacks in this country live in the South. Next is the Midwest. According to the U.S. census bureau in 2000, out of the 10 states with the largest black populations, only two were not in the South or Midwest. And one of those two states not in the South or Midwest was California. So naturally we will be listening to our own music (i.e., notice how here in the South you never hear an artist from the East Coast unless they are on the same track as one of our artists?). NY critics have attacked our dominance the same as they did the West Coast by saying we are not “lyrically” strong. Please! Andre 3000 is better than any rapper residing in NY including Talib and Mos Def. Yeah I said that shit!!! F*ck y’all East Coast critics. Debate me on the shit and I’ll win because unlike you NY critics, I actually listen to your music. You don’t listen to ours, you only hear it. I will go toe to toe with you for every NY rapper that you feel is “lyrically” strong, I will give you a Southern rapper that is stronger. As much as I hate Lil’ Flip, I love that track he has with David Banner (another who feels like me about the arrogance of East Coast hip-hop critics) on number 13 from “Underground Legend” talking about how the South helped pioneer hip-hop.

Posted by: whateva at December 14, 2005 11:56 AM

To sum it all up, I’ll go over some key points. 1. To be rated highly by an East Coast hip-hop critic you must be from the East Coast. No ands, ifs, or buts about that. 2. You had to have received a lot of play on NY radio, which is hypocritical seeing how they have and still do refuse to play songs from other regions. 3. According to New York critics, the number of record sales you make and airplay you receive goes into your consideration for “best MC” only if you are from NY (as they have done for their latest savior Jay-Z). So I am starting this blog as a way to review albums and movies with an open mind.

Posted by: whateva at December 14, 2005 12:01 PM

hey east coast is it cool being bias?

At the Source Awards in 1995 when Snoop gave the East Coast crowd a nice, well earned "F*ck y’all!" and Suge Knight managed to bitch Puffy, something happened that in the South will never be forgotten. Outkast won in the best new artist category. East Coast hip-hop critics had brainwashed so many people in NY to thinking that only good MC’s came out of New York, people were booing my boys Andre and Big Boi. I mean seriously booing as if it were Ronald Reagan that came on stage or something! This was also the fault of NY radio who refused to play anything other than NY hip-hop so most people never got a chance to hear how well put together that album was. That point right there is where my contempt for East Coast hip-hop critics and radio began.

I started noticing things about them. East Coast critics name the king of hip-hop according to whoever happens to be hot at the moment (and they MUST be from New York). Take for instance Jay-Z. I’m going to let all those in NY know something. He is not the undisputed king in hip-hop to the rest of us in the country. He is YOUR king. Many of us can’t understand why you would elevate such a corny person to royalty anyway.

Well here’s my take on Jigga/Hova/Jayz/Jay-Z or whatever the hell he’s calling himself today. I was on the East Coast between New York, Jersey, and Massachusetts the entire summer of ’96. Everybody thought he was lame as hell with that “Ain't No Nigga” BULLSHIT. That summer most people were listening to “All Eyez on Me”, which was released that previous February, and NY’s new king for the moment Nas. While Biggie was recording tracks for “Life After Death”, Nas was ruling the charts (and "the world" for that matter with Lauryn Hill) with “It Was Written” (which is also in my top ten list). More so in New York all you heard being played was Nas, LL Cool J, The Lost Boys, and Junior M.A.F.I.A. that summer of '96. Jay-Z was nobody until Biggie died. NY critics then stripped the “king” title from Nas who they considered too commercial because of the LP “Nastradamus”. Funny because the East Coast critics then contradicted themselves by giving “The Blueprint” a “classic” status when all Jay-Z did was put out corny singles and talk about money and his alcoholic beverage. Because he was getting all this airplay he is the undisputed king even though when West Coast artists were dominating the radio they were nobodies.
Now when I got back to Atlanta that fall of ‘96, Outkast dropped “Atliens”. Now if I were to go up to an East Coast hip-hop critic and say that “Atliens” was a better album than “Reasonable Doubt” they would fall down laughing and then get up and try to fight me. They would say that nobody was listening to "Atliens" and that Jay-Z’s interpretation of street life on that album was beyond competition. I would then slap that critic and remind them that no one was listening to “Reasonable Doubt”!!! Outkast was getting more spins on Southern and Midwestern radio than Jay-Z was getting in his own city. Outkast’s perception of Southern street life with tracks such as “Elevators” (which Funkmaster Flex has noted confusion at why Hot 97 wasn’t playing it), “Two Dope Boyz (In a Cadillac)”, and “Jazzy Belles” related nothing to NY street life so therefore NY critics dismissed it.
The reason the West Coast got big was because people in the South and Midwest were feeling it hard. The South, West Coast, and Midwest are like one. Since no slave ships went West, most of the black people from the West Coast have grandmothers or great grandmothers that are from the South. The Midwest is the same way. Come on Midwest, my family is from Detroit. You know how country all the old people are up there (try to remember your last family reunion). All this to say that we relate to each other better than any of us can relate to NY culture. NY critics don’t understand our obsession with cars, freaky women, and other Southern customs because they are in another world.

Posted by: whateva at December 14, 2005 12:05 PM

east coast can keep lyrically

New York hip-hop critics use the word “lyrically” the same way the Bush campaign and republicans use the word “moral values”. What the hell does it mean?!!! I’ll tell you what it means. Just as the term “moral values” means not being gay and not for gay rights or abortion rights, the word “lyrically” means being from New York.

Posted by: what at December 14, 2005 12:10 PM

Every MC coming out of the West Coast in the early to mid 90’s was lyrically strong. The thing was, New York critics didn’t listen as they usually don’t. They’ll listen very hard to find a few lines (out of context at that) that they can dismiss and then apply them to the whole album and as a basis for proving the artist not “lyrically” strong (and remember, this rule only applies to artists not from the East Coast). The West Coast was getting all the radio play (except of course in NY) and dominating record sales. Rather it was Snoop talking about Los Angeles street life or Too Short talking about pimpin’ in Oakland, West Coast artists gave the story of what their hoods were like. Other than Nas (whose “Illmatic” is always on the top 5 lists but “Doggystyle” is not), Wu-Tang Clan, De La Soul, and A Tribe Called Quest, New York was putting out bullshit in the early to mid 90’s.

Then Sean Combs/Puff Daddy/Puffy/P. Diddy/Diddy, in a strategic move, decides to introduce us to an “artist from the East Coast” Mr. Notorious B.I.G. I just knew the East Coast critics would slam Biggie for doing gangsta rap that they were so busy dismissing as not “lyrically” strong among West Coast artists. To my profound surprise, he becomes New York’s savior and a “lyrical genius”. He and his “gangbangers” Junior M.A.F.I.A. I should say that my dad has lived in Queens, NY since 1991. I spent many summers up there. I say this once and then drop it. Black people in New York are not gangbangers (in terms of crips, bloods, vicelords, etc.). They live in the fashion capital of the world and are more worried about being flashy and having a “versace swagger” than being gangsters. The only real gangsters in New York are Italian. But New York critics loved the overweight MC. I’m not saying he wasn’t hot, but I don’t see what he was doing so different from Snoop and Warren G. But New York critics in their arrogance and tunnel vision saw something that I didn’t and labeled him the king of hip-hop.
I moved to Atlanta when I was 10. The Miami Bass sound which orignated he southern hip hop sound was big here but was dismissed as usual by New York critics who labeled it “booty music”. They showed more disregard to the South than they did to the West Coast, even though Luke from 2 Live Crew made it possible for these new East Coast “gangsters” to say whatever they wanted. Luke took a case all the way to the Supreme Court fighting for hip-hop’s right to free speech and freedom of expression, which was cornerstone to the art form’s movement. He won and so did hip-hop. In 1994, Outkast dropped their first album Southernplayalisticaddilacmuzic. People wonder why Atlanta is so big on the music scene and has been for the last 13 years. It began with L.A. Reid and Babyface starting their record label here, LaFace. Outkast did really well under the production and went platinum.

As liberal as New York is, White people with money can’t turn a deal down like that even if it does come from a racist and conservative president. To all my young people reading this who may not remember Reagan, didn’t you notice when he died last year, black folk could have cared less? So anyway, as the richest in New York got their money back, the Blacks and Latinos truly suffered as that money came out of their programs and communities.

The best way to vent that anger without killing each other, came in the form of just talking and dancing it out to a bangin’ beat. Black folk have always used music and rhythm to vent frustration going back to when we were considered property but kept it crunk outside the slave quarters around the fire. MC’s such as Rakim, KRS-1, LL Cool J, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Rapper’s Delight, Big Daddy Kane, and the Fat Boys managed to vent the frustrations of Reagan policies while also providing a new way to get down and keep the girls shakin’ what they knew they needed to. This new art form spread across the nation quickly. Everybody could appreciate what New York created. Now if you are an East Coast hip-hop critic reading this, here is where you need to really start paying attention…

New York is a vastly different cultural existence than every other city in the country. With all the money White people have created for themselves up there, the city budget allowed for the most extensive public transportation system in the nation and probably in the world (i.e., cars are not a staple of life like they are for black people everywhere else in the nation, they are only a bonus, especially with those insurance prices y’all have to pay). The tall housing projects are like nowhere else other than Chicago (and we’ll get on that later). The abundance of cultures, seeing how New York used to be the only port for immigrants, is so much different than the usual black and white, and/or Mexican realities for the rest of the country. All that to say that in other cities, MC’s started popping up to tell stories that related to their own local situation more so than subway stories.

As Reagan took the money away from the hood, he ironically started using it to fund locking up all the brothers that resided there with his BS “war on drugs”. Therefore even though this country was allowing all the drugs (especially cocaine) into the country, our Black and Latino brothers were being locked up for making money off of it. Police became more corrupt than ever as Supreme Court decisions on 4th, 5th, and 6th amendment issues started leaning more conservatively and in law enforcement’s favor under William Rehnquist as chief justice.

My first real memory of hip-hop came from watching NWA straight outta Compton on Rap City over my cousin Donnie’s house. Their song "F*ck tha Police" captured how a lot of brothers were feeling during the mid to late eighties. New York hip-hop critics wondered two things at this point; 1. Wow, there are black people in other parts of the country? 2. Wow, I thought you had to live in New York to be frustrated with the system. While the rest of the country took this song as a classic, New York hip-hop critics painted these guys as just a bunch of angry Jeri Curled rappers not from New York. Then when Public Enemy comes out with their copycat song (as New York hip hop usually does) “911 Is a Joke”; they are viewed as all conscious and revolutionary.

My next memory of hip-hop comes from the first album I owned “The Chronic” which is my favorite album besides “Aquemeni”. This album started the West Coast revolution which is why it’s not surprising this album never ends up on the “top 5 albums of all time” lists that you see done by various magazines and online sites operated by East Coast critics. The West Coast caught the ear of record labels who flocked to get more production out of artists from the The West Coast. The sound was more marketable nationwide and as I stated earlier, people were able to better relate to brothers in Los Angeles than in New York.

Instead of being happy that the art form New York created, was so popular nationwide, New York critics started hating. I remember hearing the Geto Boys’ first hit “My Mind’s Playin Tricks on Me”. This song that told the sad story of how poverty and cocaine had it’s grasp on most hoods, became a classic. In New York, the Geto Boys were not taken very seriously simply for the fact they were from Houston. I don’t get it New York critics!!! Why do you have to be from New York, where hip-hop spawned, to be a classic MC? The Motown sound originated in Detroit. Did people in Detroit respect Ray Charles less because he was from North Florida? Hell no! Jazz originated in New Orleans. Did people in the South respect Duke Ellington less because he made the Harlem Renaissance sound famous? No!!! Why then do New York hip-hop critics never give as much credit and respect to artists from other localities as they do their own?

take it easy, fag. no one gives a shit bout the south. no body dismissed the south. we fucked wit ghetto boys and outcast. we hust don't fuck wit the lames yall put out now like D4l, paul wall slim thug, mike jones , gucci mayne, lil flip, ying yang, dem franchize boys.ect.. and so fuckin what if we don't like som1's music. we created the shit. it's ours to criticize you ignorant bitch. don't try to paly the whole east coast west coast card cause a southern muthafucka wouldn't know shit about it. yall were irrelevant it was just the creators of hip-hop and gangsta rap. what major contribution did yall make that completely changed the game?

tell me where you got that south rappers make more than east caost rappers. i don't know what planet you're on dickhead but out of the top selling artists of this millenium (EM,JAY-Z, NELLY, 50, KANYE,) NONE OF THE WERE FROM THE SOUTH. and as far as all that independent deal bullshit goes, all of the so-called "independents" that only have "distribution" deals with the large companies are putting the money right back in new york cause that's were the fuckin companies are based DUMBASS. if a new york or east coast artist sell local then so what. yall are the kings of that shit. and FYI: GETTING VIDEOS PLAYED ON BET DON'T MEAN YOU SELL RECORDS.

also, where do you get off tryin to drop knowledge about lyricists? you don't know shit bout that cause you a youngin that ain't been around long enough to know what real hip-hop is. don't get mad at new york or the east coast cause you got a lot of shitty "music". and do really think that even if cease made some fake ass "crunk" that NY would be in the club actin stupid like some of yall muthafuckas? don't get shit twisted, we don't go to the clubs to slam dance up here. that's not a good look for a NY nigga. or female. are you mad cause you feel like the rest of the country treat yall like step children? thats not our fault. get over it.
why do you care about east coast opinions anyway? you're too emotional. calm down and be easy. you're way too sensitive. man up nigga.

this bitch Whateva don't know shit bout new york. you don't travel. you're an ignorant nigger just like many of the rappers you listen to. la is way more like new york cause we are more culturally diverse. you muthafuckas see a mexican and you're amazed. both those great cities have a lot more to offer anyone who comes to visit than some farm land and cow tipping. why would you be proud to be ignorant? how the fuck are you takin shots at public enemy? what has the south come out with that can compare? you are a lil young ass boy who don't know shit bout history. you are obviously not as old as you claim to be.

first of all lil boy, i live here, you read an article by another angry southerner and decided to run with it.
One of the things that is seething through you're post is an extreme jealousy that is more than a lil obvious.

are you mad at us up here cause our kids apply themselves more at school? are you mad because personal standards are higher? check the facts, you guys school systems are way behind ours. i can't tell you how many times i've tried to help a high school student that transfered from down south get back up to speed.( i work in a high school). are you mad because no matter what yall do, the world will still look at new york as the epicenter of so many great things.

Here's a tip: instead of being jealous of us go out and educated yourself outside of the south. you'd be surprised at how much more there is to the world.

Posted by: case at December 14, 2005 01:04 PM

and who cares what your first hip-hop memory was. the question is, outside of two groups where were your people? and since when did you become an expert on culture?

when did the deep south suddenly become worldy and diverse? and speaking from the position of some1 who is half puerto rican, what the hell do you know of the latino struggle. last time i checked the only city in the south that could relate was miami. i'm betting your city is nothin like miami.

you're a funny guy, i must admit. i like how you try to speak on shit you know nothin about. when i read your post i thought of you as a brainwashed house nigger that has just has much hate for northerners as your former massas. any black person that showed sings of progression, crackers hated. i get that same vibe fro you. if the truth kills a man, let him die.

to all southerners with hostility for the north(only them): don't you think it's a little odd that you adopted the same attitude about the north that your former slave owners did? don't you wonder why you use the same terms for northern blacks as white people used to when they saw educated black people (uppity negroes)? like i have said in the past, the south has made dramatic progression but it has a long way to go. wake up.

stop hating your brothers from the north because we have different value systems. stop setting us back because that's exactly what you do when you display a white southerners attitude.

First of all im a dude nad i don't have a problem with letting out what i say.
Once again east coast have proven their igronance again i tell you, you people never fail at saying what you think is polliticall correct and then put icing on it like people are supposed to accept it. Then you have the nerve to ask what the south has done for hip hop well everything, yall ain't doin shit so literally, and we changed the sound of hip hop. Hip hop is diverse dumb-ass it dosen't just belong in one place it grows.

East coast east coast i'll prey for you

The north is viewed for so many great things huh, well not to burst your bubble name somebody outside the north that thinks the same, none. We are very seriuos about education, don't judge on what you saw or claimed to teach. I don't care about east coast hip hop and im pretty certian that you don't care about ours. Yall just mad because my posts made yall looklike complete arrogrant people and thats the naked truth. Plus, there are a lot of great people from the south check ya history or do you already know and too embarssed to admit it. Yall said im hatin on my nothern brothers bitch i got plenty of friends up norht and they will tell you that i am just as smart as them. If i am hatin why am i in a southern message board are yall in the right place. I can match any southern group better than public enemy.

hey east coast wanna knoe real black people check this cause to us NY rappers are not viewed as black.

Analogies of the phrase, "Going down South," for your consideration. Going down South is as returning to your roots.

Going down South is as visiting the country-ass relatives you never discuss in your bourgie Northern circles, but whose company you enjoy more than anyone's.

Going down South is as -- reluctantly -- kissing that area of your woman's body, but loving the reaction enough to consider it an acquired taste.

Going down South is as dissing Southern hip hop while hanging with your Timberland boots-baggy jeans-wearing friends, then hypocritically rushing the local mom-and-pop to cop the latest Outkast album four days before the street date.

Going down South is as embracing the epicenter of African-American soul. The soul of black folk, some would say, where people still live life according to the meditations of their hearts. Where everybody still has a "Big Ma," an "Uncle Joe" and a "Cousin Peanut."
Down South is where folk can place urban realities in perspective, with relative ease and understanding, because their collective collard green-cornbread ways have survived longer than crack and AIDS epidemics, "3/5-a-man" legislation, indentured servitude or unfulfilled promises of reparations. The lifeblood of Southern soul flowed through the African slave trade, longer and louder than the voices of hip-hop purists who swear the most creative rap shit of the moment couldn't possibly be coming from the "dirty South."

eat that east coast

Im not gonna waste mty time anymore yall just prove that yall are just arrogant post by post.

or who ever tha fuck you is

seriously you know nothing about the south, farms, cattle that is what you think the south has to offer, i was born and raised in the south and i have never seen a farm nor cattle so help me understand is it what you see on tv but im igronant.

I live in a city called americus right outside of atlanta and i could tell more about hip hop more than you test me.

i cant even name how many west coast niggas be on these blogs playin the shit out of the south. every other region now gets luv but the south cause yall came on here and embarrassed yourselves. real niggas out west(like myself) show way more luv to the east coast then we do yall south niggas.

Posted by: imnotfromnewyork-ortheeastcoast at December 14, 2005 07:56 PM

yo to the dude out west, they do have an inferiority complex. i went down there earlier in the fall as i often do becuase i got family that moved back down there a few years ago. anyway, i went to one of my cousins friend's house wit her. the girl's brother starts tryin to talk to me and i wasn't feelin him. (he talked like the most ignorant black guy i've ever met. no exageration. and he was serious)they aint even live in the fuckin hood. they lived in an upper middle-class burb.

he got all mad and caught feelins, talkin bout "yall new york females is too stuck up, think yall better than the rest of the wolrd cause of where u from". i told him that it had more to do with the way him and his boys carried themselves than anything else. needless to say, he actually thought i didnt want an ignorant nigga jus cause i'm from new york.

i guess where he's from girls dont like educated men, so he blamed it on the fact that i was from new york. now that's an inferiority complex.

I am speechless, east coast yall just proved what i posted on all fo the above, it's kind of wack to come on a southern post if you are out east aren't you guys too educated to be on this website.

Why you mad at us , cause yall know yall hip hop is done, why you think p diddy keeps signing southern artists cause even he knoe the east coast done.

And to F### D4L you on the other hand should be mad since the ny call yall the second city.

East Coast the rest of the country is pointing a middle finger at yall beleive it or not.

Im not educated "please" i graduated with a 4.0 gpa plus i was villa victoran of my class so don't try me on that education shit deal with them big ass rats in your alley sewer trash

We ain't bittin on the east or the west style the southern sound started with the miami bass sound then it spread, plus the south is diverse, we won't fall off because you will get different sounds commin from it.

I couldn't give a living fuck about public enemy or east coast music and thats the god's honest truth.

Posted by: junylikeslaughinatangrypeople at December 15, 2005 09:02 AM

I haft to admit that D4L, FRANCHISE BOYS are lame but why does that effect the rest of yall's perception of the south. What if people thought that 50 cent represented the east in a big way, they would think people on the esat act just like him and listen to his music.

people in the south don't act like d4l they screwed the south up with their style a lot of people in the south even dis-own them.

Posted by: whateva at December 15, 2005 09:31 AM

who said that affected the rest of the country's perception? i beleive you were told by several people that there are several artists in the south that get respect no matter where they go in this country. a perfect example is scarface. he as southern as you can get being from houston. AND NO ONE CAN NAME MORE THAN 5 ARTISTS IN HISTORY THAT CAN FUCK WITH HIM, LET ALONE BE BETTER THAN HIM.

you're the one on here venting all you're frustration on the east coast, particularly new york when D4l being wack aint had shit to do with that nonsense you wrote.
that shit was uncalled for and u make the south look bad with all of that baseless unnecessary hate. i don't listen to too much east coast shit either but you don't see to many west niggas trashin everybody.

I will admit I have said that southern rap sucks. I aint gonna front, but its because of dudes like D4L and what makes it worse is that a lot of ppl from the south support D4L just because they're from the south, but the thing is they're not a good representation of the south. All the people thats not from the south, not living in the south at the moment, or not into southern underground shit only sees dudes like Franchise, D4L, Trap Squad, young capone and shit so how else are they supposed to view the situation? They're not the ones giving these lame ass dudes record deals. D4L isnt only bad for southern rap but like jesus juice said, they bad for hip hop...embarassin lol

lol @ philly. U know whose embarassin for the east? Juelz Santana & the whole "dipset" and 50 cent, Mase. Everytime I see them dudes/hear them dudes I cringe from embarassment. Benzino, peedi crack. Lord knows they needa stay their asses in the house

Posted by: Bleed at December 15, 2005 10:47 AM

I agree people down here do support D4L just because their from the south, they know D4L lame but they just don't admit it.

It's sad that franchise boys, D4L represent us i get headaches everytime i see their videos someone should shoot them.

Posted by: whateva at December 15, 2005 10:50 AM

i agree with the fact that dipset and them niggas suck. i'm from the east coast and i can't stand to see that shit on BET. the sad part about the industry is that it won't let ACTUAL ARTIST shine. they know they can make a quick buck off of the lames cause white people will buy them records.

Posted by: i'm a jesus juice drinker at December 15, 2005 10:56 AM

if we combined all the wack artist out now from every coast,do yall know how many of them niggas will outnumber the real shit?

Posted by: joeyTHEDON at December 15, 2005 10:58 AM

Yea, its a damn shame son. Anybody can get a record deal now except the real shit...how the fuck did this happen? All I know is them white ppl support most of it and basically own the rap industry so I guess it goes any way they want it to. They dont want no rappers spittin shit to us about whats up in the real world, but they sure want "niggers" to make rap records about killing other "niggers" and make money off of it. Most of the money goes to them anyway....I aint racist or got anything against white ppl but this is fucked up

Real Artists:

East: nas, jay-z, black poet, jada, mos def, taileb queli

West: snoop, ice cube, cypres hill, mac 10, xzibit

south: scarface, outkast, killer mic, 8 ball mjg

Midwest: kanye west, common, eminem, slum village

Posted by: whateva at December 15, 2005 11:37 AM

nope, cant even control our own industry, but u cant just blame white ppl cause a lot of black ppl sell out for money...smh.
Whateva, nah they wouldnt and then if all of the real emcees got the spotlight, ppl like D4L would have to step their game up to stay in the game instead of dumbed down candy lyrics cause every1 would finally realize whats real hip hop and whats not. Of course some ppl still would buy dumb shit like that, but not hip hop heads

Posted by: whateva at December 15, 2005 11:40 AM

hell yeah. it's not hot. and it's not a good look. i wish black people would find more resourcful wayz to spend they dough. send some of that money back to the fuckin ghetto. in the south i know they be supporting they artists a lot. they should support they people. in the east niggaz love to brag about they paper. i be seein diset and them niggas in harlem and outside of a few contributions they don't do shit.

Posted by: i'm a jesus juice drinker at December 15, 2005 11:50 AM

I just got through watching the laffy taffy video and to be hones i have to say i dont see anything wrong with it. I know it sound crazy cause i just bought my four year old a keyboard and he played the beat to a "t" but it just remind me of old school hip hop like kwame and kid and play when niggas was having fun with hip hop. I mean what makes a good lyristist I feel canibus is the greatest that ever did it cause he so futuristic with his but he aint sellin. I mean battle rapper arent great sellers look at jin! I pay two months rent money to see canibus jin and eminem go at it and i already know like the rest of you em wouldnt make it to the second round. I mean the street is the street and music is music we need to remember that. I remember when fifty came out you would have thought pac had an illegitimate son born i queens like he was the second coming or something but now everybody hate fifty I still like him well his old stuff but hey fifty gotta eat. I listened to mostly east coast music my whole life but being from the south ive seen too many good artist go unnoticed. Even laffy taffy is old as hell down here but yall just now hearing it. Just like back in the day when i was trying to find out who the hell method man was. Just enjoy the music and if you dont like it well dont just dont try to make the rest of the world feel like you. I got a free lap dance off laffy taffy cause the dancer liked the song so much. Hell look at the wu tang when the first came out the looked kind of funny you gotta admit but it didt take away from the music. stop hatin on the south just cuz we diffrent we aint hate on B.I.G. overrated ass he cant see Cee Lo from goodie mob thats a fact ant Jay-z cant see andre 3000 and Im wearing s.carters as we speak. The first shall be last and the last shall be first for a long time. ha ha east coast records aint sellin!!! suffer bitches!!!

Posted by: daredevil at December 15, 2005 07:18 PM

daredevil, you're wack. we've been through this argument a thousand times so i won't even take it there. niggas put that east vs. south shit to rest (like they should have) but lets not talk about selling records cause ceelo aint doin it. that's funny cause your one of a small, small, minority that feels the way you. southern records sell mainly in the south but nobody else is hating. that just mean some people have their own musical preferences. as much as you like to think the south was only getting money, you're wrong. People have said it a million times but i'll repost it: eminem, 50 cent, nelly and jay are the only dudes to consistenly move big units since 2000. NONE were from the south. sorry to burst your bubble but it's true.

no disrespect to the south but yall gotta keep cornballs like daredevil in check. he kinda ruins things for yall.
you got ignorant niggas like him that hate and represent badly for the south. it's a good thing most of us already know not everyone from the south are haters.

quick question for daredevil: out of the rappers you braggin about selling records, which ones is helping you feed your son? you need to worry bout getting your own gwop.

one more question: how you got a kid and got time to be on some young ass east vs south shit?lmao. see ladies and gentlemen, another broke internet thug sittin behind a computer braggin about niggas success that he don't even know.hahahaha. you must not have a job or you do have a job and you're a dead beat dad that sits at the computer all night when he gets home, without spending time with his kid.

how do any of yall mufuckas argue over which rappers gettin money? yall all sound stupid when none of it is goin to u!! i notice how it's always fans hatin on other coasts and not the rappers themselves. it's cause they all gettin more money than yall wack niggas on these blogs so what is yall sayin? whether you like em or not, they gettin more money than you cause you sittin at a computer writing about them gettin paper instead of getting yours!!!!

IM OUT.

The A-T-L Anthem Gets No Love

One of the big uproars in the city right now is the so-called atlanta anthem, "The A-T-L" created by Dallas Austin under the careful guidance and instruction of Mayor Shirley Franklin. “The ATL” is performed by Ciara, Monica, Jagged Edge, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins of TLC and Sammie to name a few.

One detractor argues that the hip hop anthem might as well say "bring your boom-box and your bling-bling to Atlanta.” while another says that it caters to “gun-blazing, Ray Lewis-admiring thugs.” (So I see we still haven't got over Ray and his O.J. imitation)...

The bottom line is this, nobody is ever going to agree 100% but they should have solicited more input from the city and incorporated artists from all across the spectrum when talking about creating a city-wide song. If they would have done those two things, then there would be no room for debate.

What difference does it make really, we introduced it at a Falcons home game with the silent notion that the Falcons were going somewhere in the playoffs and that's not happening anymore. I'm sure they felt like they would have a chance to blow up the A-T-L chant as well as the song during that time but the Falcons had they're eye on something else, an early vacation.

I take it back to death row cuz there is no way the game is going to put the west back on the map. Mad niggas out here show that pussy no love of any kind. A stripper turned gangsta? Get serious. I don't even think the game buys that bullshit. But, with daz and kurrupt reuniting we just might make a comeback. That rap shit rotates like every 5 years anyways so who cares. I must of went some place else because ATL is the shit. I was down there for the home opener Eagles versus the Falcons and I must say if any cats came to Philly talkin' half the shit I was talkin' it would have been over. I was like "Welcome to South Philly!" "We just gonna come down here , get a victory and leave ATL like we found it." and stuf like that. The people were VERY hospitable and friendly. We walked everywhere with our Eagles gear and people showed mad love. The women are beautiful and very approachable. On the downside, every street is named Peachtree something and alot of folks in Atlanta are not from Atlanta. That being said, I could move there in a heart beat because it's slow motion, hospitable and economical. PEACE UP A-TOWN DOWN!!!!! Just remember, you can't stop the haters, and why should you?

Posted by: skdamc at December 19, 2005 02:03 PM

Also, ran into Bone Crusher at the game. Cool dude. Saw cats reppin' P.S.C shirts and shit like that. You do that up top and cats swear you dick ridin'. The South supports their artists in a way the North doesn't. We have too many cats like"I could spit better than him, why he on the radio?" instead of doin' it and gettin' on. Peace to Gladys Knight Chicken and Waffles, Hooters up on Peachtree Center and the Underground.

All them niggaz from New York ever do is hate. They hate on each other. That's why the New York rap scene looks weak. Back when Wu-Tang, Black Moon, Gangstarr, and all those other people were out in the mid 90's, everybody in New York were running with each other. That's why New York ran rap. After Biggie died, everybody up there started hating on each other. Now they dumb asses mad at the South. It didn't happen overnight dumb fucks. While y'all doing demos, trying to get record deals, we was down south starting record companies.

The only reason the West fell off was because of Suge bitch ass. Them West Coast cats goin come back though. And once y'all New York niggaz quit hatin on each other, y'all goin get back on top too.

Fuck hip-hop. The crackers own Hip-Hop.
PLEASE QUIT HATIN ON THE SOUTH. WE DON'T HATE ON Y'ALL.

Posted by: chevy g. hustle at December 19, 2005 02:17 PM

Chevy wtf are u talking about? lol. Why is it always somebody from the south to bring up New York when this had nothing to do with new york? And nobodys mad at anybody.U obviously dont know what hip hop is if u say "fuck hip hop" see thats the problem right there.Crackers dont own hip hop, they own rap. WTF is "on top"? most of us dont care about mainstream shit minus 50 cent cuz NY disowned him for being a sell out and a few others sold out too.Ppl gettin scrilla doing them and most of us dont follow trends for radio play or a spot on BET thats for sell outs and as u see not many ppl from NY or Cali is selling out for mainstream shit(but some are). They're doing them from mixtapes, indie shit, all types of shit. All the dudes I know over here get deals constantly thrown at them left and right, but they dont want a record deal if they dont get creative control, descent advance and a fair contract ect. They want them to rap about what everybody else is talkin about and thats not goin down.Whose hating on the south? I see mostly southern cats hating on the west and east on here for no credible reason so how do yall not hate on us? Hate is hate not just NY niggas hate on each other. Westcoast niggas hate on eachother, southern niggas hate on eachother too just like some Blacks hate on Blacks which is obvious on this website.Yall be actin like we live in different countries and shit...its just a damn coast.

I listen to some, but its old shit. I listen to a lot of Westcoast rap though and Eastcoast. I just dont like mainstream southern rap and local southern rap, but I dont get a chance to hear much of underground southern hip hop. I dont fuck with rap that much, mostly hip hop.

Man I don't know why everybody keep saying that somebody else is hating. Look everybody has there own pics and choses but for as that lame as song the mayor is wrong for that sht there are to many other song that rep the A to hard for this bullshit. Louisiana might as well put Master P and Baby together for a song of NEW ORLEANS and let that lil phony ass nigga CHopper aka Young City sing that hook. That would be some bullshit just like the ATL song

Damn: I dont even really undastand the whole difference between rap and hiphop but on my side I listen to Rass Kas Yukmouth Ya Boy and alot of otha niggas but spider loc wack to me .On the eastside I like Papoose Red Cafe Saigon Busta Rhymes and alot of otha niggas . On the southside I like chamillion or whateva his name is and z-ro iight but thats about it .I dont really listen to it cuz like I said itz wack to me .I know its just a coast but Im talkin about the music not the coast . I aint got no probs wit the coast just the music . I listen to the radio 2 stay up to date with shit sometime and I dont hear southern rap a lot nomore but thatz not the point the point is I wouldnt mind embracin southern rap if what Im hearin was good but most of what Im hearin is wack and that aint my fault and I aint hating just statin .

Yeah a lot of people on here dont know the difference, but I wont explain. I rather you do the research yourself if u really want to know instead of taking my word for it. I listen to all of those niggas except Ya Boy. I never heard of him before. They dont play a lot of southern rap on the radio stations over here like they used to either. Thats what Im saying, if what I was hearing was good then I would embrace it like I did the Midwest and West except Game, Nelly, Chingy. People swear up and down it was a big thing with the east and west when it wasnt. It was mostly bad boy vs Deathrow...mostly suges ass and everyone knows he had something to do with both Pacs and biggies death. I dont like anybody in G-unit especially 50 cent so I dont know about spiderloc's shit but a lot of ppl said he's wack. I'd rather hear it for myself. miamistyles a lot of people on the track aint from ATL lol.

The crackers don't own hip-hop?

You crazy as fuck! The culture is hip-hop, not the music. You see white folks trying to dress like us. They try to talk like us. They try to do everything that they see on BET and MTV. That's hip-hop. Our style of dress, slang, and things of that nature. Rap is the shit you here on the radio? D4L is rap music? Ying-Yang Twins is rap music? Tony Yayo is rap music? Cut the bullshit. The crackers own hip-hop.

Posted by: chevy g. hustle at December 19, 2005 04:20 PM

Chevy:
"Crackers" dont own hip hop. And wtf type of racists shit is that? How many white DJs do you see? How many white rappers do you see? Since u make it seem like "crackers" took over hip hop. In order to take over hip hop you have to know wtf hip hop is. They own rap...cut the bullshit. Theres a lot a black people who dress gothic and shit like white people who are into that shit. Theres a lot of black people who try to be white. How the hell is that owning something? Like I said they own rap, not hip hop. Yes Ying Yang is rap, 50 cent is rap, Yayo is rap. D4L is in another class lmao. I dont know wtf to call that.

ChiTown, mufuckas!!! Da Bears ruffed Vick's gay a$$ up!

Otha than that, ATL is the ish tho. It was cool for the 4 days I was there. Fine a$$ women overflowin in the streets.

As far as the music, this ain't civil war. Up north, out west, whatever... everybody gets they time to shine. The only people that make money off coastal beefs is the record companies. I love all music, u just can't compare all music. South niggas been makin that crunk shit and that screwed shit long before they blew up, and they gone continue making it when they outta the spotlight. Personally I always liked 8Ball & MjG and Geto Boys shit more than the new south shit cuz they were spittin, but there's a time and place for everything.

Niggas and black people are gonna 'hate' on whatever is 'hot' at the time. Take the word hate out our vocab and we can build on some shit.

Posted by: Damn at December 19, 2005 04:55 PM

What is the majority here? Who buys more music? eh? Yeszir the whiteman! So therefore, he owns the commercial side of hip-hop. He can NEVER own true hip-hop, pshh, we dont even own hip-hop! People dont own culture, they live it. However, you CAN have a huge influence on a culture, especially economically. If tha whiteman wants to hear about blacks shootin up each other in tha hood... something suburbia never sees... then what kinda things will the rapper rap about? Yearp! Whatever is gonna sell! The whiteman is who's gonna buy the music! And he dont wanna hear no progressive, positive, blacks movin up. Its why rappers like Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def etc. dont sell what 50 Cent does. But I bet if either one of those cats comes to Wilmington, NC (where I go to school right now) Im goin to go to the show. But 50? I already be changin tha radio station when he comes on. Its the same reason stock holders can influence corporate businesses that they hold stock in. Businesses listen to who holds the money. Argh! see, ya got me all ventin and lettin out frustrations n ish that dont even anything to do with the actual topic!

But tha south is driven more on beats than lyrics (not sayin that we dont be flowin!) but thats where we fall into the niche of rap. Not every region can have the best beats, lyrics, singers, writers etc. Its impossible, we all live a diff lifestyle so we excel in rap in diff ways. So jus appreciate tha south for what its mainly been able to do... GET THA PARTY CRUNNKKK!!!!

YaBoiRoddyJ u shouldn't make it out to be that thats all the south can mainly do. Thats why a lot of people have so much negative shit to say about it. But you're on the right track with the commercial side, but its still rap. Maybe where you're from they call it hip hop or commercial hip hop, but where Im from, we call it rap and its been called rap since the day it was created over here. Everything besides that I completely agree with lol @ you venting. The shit pisses me off too and whats worse is people fall into the trap they set up for us.

Posted by: Damn at December 19, 2005 05:30 PM

are some of you really serious? you aren't journalists or hip-hop experts, so that means your opinion isn't the only one that exists. all this hating on other coasts, or even worse hating on people from your own coast because they aren't reppin it the way you want to, is so weak. why waste your energy in such a negative manner? this type of behavior will be the death of hip-hop, not "crackers" as you ignorant type like to tell yourselves.

the South always stands together and if they have a beef, they keep it low-key and don't devote whole radio and magazine interviews to hating, which really just diverts people's attention from the music. you don't see very many southern cats hatin on Ciara or any other people on the song, they only said it could have been better, which doesn't discredit the artists in anyway. but all the rest of you bitch and whine about a song that isn't even your hometown's anthem. now that's a waste of your time.

for example, the west coast was behind Game 100% until he started shining on his own, and then it was time to hate because he wasn't poor and hungry like the rest of you. stop being so fickle and support your artists, and maybe there will be hope for hip-hop yet.

If you're gonna be mad, be mad at the our people as a whole set us back not what coast they're from Cap. Why are people seperating shit like we all live in a different country? Hip hop is a culture thats impossible for it to "die". Theres always gonna be someone living hip hop culture no matter if its musically mainstream or not. The south has to stand together right now in order to come up. Come on its been years and they havent gotten a chance to "shine" or w/e so of course its only right to stick together, but what about sticking together as a whole instead of dividing? Thats whats wrong with Black people and a lot of people in general. How do you know the westcoast was behind Game 100% and how are they hating...do you even know why they dont like him?

Posted by: Damn at December 19, 2005 06:05 PM

Wait a minute.Their is really.A 'Game' tape!?

Posted by: Da Chi at December 19, 2005 06:21 PM

bxconnect: if there was a tape out don't you think it would make one of these hatin ass blogs or the rumors page on allhiphop.com?

damn: you killed it right there when you said nobody was even talking about the song. that's what this whole blog was supposed to be about, but it reverted back to the same old coast-hating shit. and no i don't know why the west coast hates on Game and that's my whole point.. people hate on somebody for no reason, especially if they're really on their grind. we build people up to tear them down. the only reasons i'm hearing is because Game was a male stripper, however both 50 and Yuk claimed to have the tape but never released it. that tells me it doesn't exist, because 50 could kill Game's career in an instant if he put that out there.

i couldn't agree with you more that blacks should stick together as a whole, but so far the South is the only ones even showing any effort in terms of supporting each other in hip-hop.

Posted by: cap at December 19, 2005 06:24 PM

and also Damn, i don't know what this was all about:
"Its just a damn coast. If you're gonna be mad, be mad at the our people as a whole set us back not what coast they're from Cap. Why are people seperating shit like we all live in a different country?"

^^^that was my exact point, go back and read my original post. i'm saying who cares what coast you're from, it's all hip-hop. If you're wack, you're wack; if you're sick, then that's what you are, no matter where you're from.

Posted by: cap at December 19, 2005 06:29 PM

Theres more to life than Hip Hop thats what Im saying. What about supporting each other politically? Supporting our communities, not living up to the stereotypical "nigga" aspects of life? Instead of buying a $800 pair of jeans, what about giving that back to the people who really need it ya dig? What it comes down to is...it doesnt matter who "supports" each other in "Hip hop". What matters is how we support each other overall. I doubt they dislike Game for no reason. Im pretty sure its a lot of ppl in California who actually know the truth about the Game situation and whats not the truth. I dont know the truth so I really dont care lol. And yeah I agree man...it doesnt matter where you're from. That shit is wack.

Posted by: Damn at December 19, 2005 06:35 PM

i think the song is gay ass hell. i ga song is my city anthem.

as far as music from wherever, its all about how u feel. i listen to all types of music, some for the lyrics, and some for the beats. its all about how i feel at that time. its certain artist i will not listen too from up north, and there are certain artist that i will not listen too down south. honestly though, there are only a few artist out there that i will listen too all the time. outkast(all their cds), goodie mob(soul food, still standing), jay-z(all his cds), pac(all cds),ti(all), 8ball & mjg(all), ice cube(all),nwa(straight outta compton,niggaz4life),biggie(ready to die, life after death), wu tang(36 chambers-classic), and public enemy(all). with those people u cant go wrong. i know there are more, but those are my favorites.

Posted by: bxconnect at December 19, 2005 06:58 PM

Damn: i can say that i agree with everything you just said. hip hop is more than music and our artists need to represent black people as a whole better, and they should give back to the cities where they came from.

the whole thing with Game, i don't know why the west coast ain't feelin him, it's hard to tell. i just never hear a good reason. same with 50, it's always because he's a snitch, but i've yet to see evidence of that, so i'm not gonna say that myself. i just don't care for 50 because he's arrogant and his music has not been up to par lately. i will admit, i am biased and Game is one of my favorite artists so maybe that's why i don't get all the hate. plus i'm not one to just hate on a grown man gettin his money like that.

i just say we stop all the coast-hatin, and keep what we say about artists at criticism, not blind hating.

If we discriminate upon one another on simple issues as Music preferences or where one was reared (region to region) what makes you think we can unite and fight such issues that politically affect us. PLEASE!!!! We discriminate upon one another against what region we live in what music we listen to how much lighter one's skin complexion over the next, financial status, educational background, weight, and so on. I even read one post talking about our incorrect English (Northern SLANG) is better than you incorrect English (Southern SLANG). WHAT?!?!?! Am I missing something. We will never unite as a whole in the black community because we spend to much time coming down on one another because it is a learned habit since slavery. Our insecurities play a role in how we view each other and people different from us. SO IF WE CAN'T SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER BECAUSE OF WHERE ONE LIVES OR WHAT THEY PREFER TO LISTEN TO IN MUSIC or other simple issues WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THOSE SAME POEPLE ARE GOING TO JOIN THE CAUSE TO FIGHT AGAINST THE STEREOTYPES THAT HOLD OUR PEOPLE CAPTIVE when they are stereotyping one another themselves. Think that one over because it DOES MATTER.

All those niggas has beefs so don't front like the East is the only coast on it like that. Two, The south is big on sound, not lyrical content, commerical hip hop likes those 808's, horns and fruity d4l beats. Despite Mike Jones lyrical prowness that cornball sold a mil. Real hiphop, not the corporate beats and the commerical lyrical skills is not on the radio. Tell me who's fuckin' with Talib, Common, Mos, Papoose, Jean grae, Black thought on the lyrical tip. The people in my list just to name a few speak the truth and spit with desire, while the rest of the people taking the game in a direction of fame and fortune. Hip hop is culture and about expression, when the shit became about money you got people lacking innovation and dick riding conforming skills to the masses instead of that personal form of expression it used to be. Posted by: bdove1 at December 20, 2005 10:58 AM

bdove Im going to say the same thing I told the other dude in the other blog but address you:
Everybody wanted to do what NYC did and now that theyre participating in NYC culture, theyre disrespecting it(with bum ass music and dumb ass comments like northern niggas being on eachother dick). It may take a while before the south gets full respect if they get respect at all due to people who make the south look bad and due to people in the south supporting the people who make the south look bad. U said "Music is music" but hip hop is hip hop and it may not mean shit to you but to a lot of us "northern niggas" it means a lot to us. U cant beg for respect you have to earn it.People like crime mob, paul wall, mike jones, franchise, d4l, young capone, and whoeva else is giving the south a bad name.Maybe u cant see it but everybody else does. Thats why there's always people like Luda always trying to prove that there are some lyrical rappers in the south and thats why people midwest, north, west and even some southerners will have something to say and know the difference between "hating" and an opinion. U may not like Country music, but thats your opinion right or is that "hating"? You may not like Punk rock but is that your opinion or are YOU "hating"? New York didnt get full respect either when the music element of Hip Hop went vinyl and kinda mainstream, but it did get a little more noticed due to the sugar hill gang, but that wasnt really hip hop music. Now not only is New York expressing their culture, but people all over the world are into New York culture. Hot 97 here in New York wouldnt even play Hip Hop. look what they're doing now since its making them money smh. Point is in order for the south to be respected like yall want it yall gotta stop supporting everybody from the south just because they're from the south. Only support mainstream southern rappers that are actually good.Support underground ones and make sure these underground ones get noticed beyond the underground so everyone can see that the south deserves respect in hip hop. And some dont know what being "lyrical" is and call anybody a lyrical genius get real. U got ppl who actually defend D4L or them kids crime mob what type of shit is that? How u gonna get respect off that lol. Its more clowns reppin the south, but only a few that are really good. Yall need to keep defending and supporting the ones that are really good cause u cant claim scarface, geto boyz, outkast ect forever. Thats getting old. After they all paved the way yall start defending niggas like Franchise Boyz? I dont know if respect will ever come with ppl like that in the game. Young Jeezy isnt a lyrical dude but I guess ppl like his swagger or some shit. I hope his next album isnt mostly about him being a trapstar cause if thats all he gonna talk about he'll lose the lil respect he does have.

Posted by: T.K. at December 20, 2005 11:13 AM

Posted by: T.K at December 20, 2005 11:14 AM

Getting back to the point. I don't care for the atl song myself. I agree it couldv'e been a lot better and there should have been better artists to sing it. It sure as hell ain't no anthem to represent everyone in our city.
That being said, I'm not seeing how anybody on this blog is an expert on hip hop. Nobody is really pleading a good case but T.K. I never understood why people complain so much on the South and their music when it is obviously making the money. If you think its garbage, ok, don't buy it, but why does everybody in the rap game have to have the same lyrical type content anyway? Why can't we have fun with music sometimes? Why does everything be so damn serious. Sometimes I want to hear something that speaks to my soul and hell, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I just want to shake my ass to a good ass beat. Sometimes I just want to get crunk. That's what I like about our culture is that its so diverse. Different beautiful shades of black people with different ways to express themselves. Anyway, I went to a club one time that played nothing but hard core rap all night and that sh*t put me to sleep. Everybody don't always want to listen to that all the time all night long. I agree that there are some southern rappers talking about garbage and D4L is an example (cuz I couldn't stand that laffy taffy song) but I'll tell you what, we have a good as time acting stupid to it in the club. Everybody just needs to take a deep breath and just do you.

P.S. Why the hell do all these damn blogs end up talking about north vs. south. This shit is getting old

Posted by: atlsweetie at December 20, 2005 12:30 PM

very well put atlsweetie. that laffy taffy song is in the top ten of the wackest damn songs of the year. close to number one.

hip hop, rap, or music in general is all about how and what u feel as a individual. whether u live up north, down south, or out west its about u, and how u feel when u listen to it. different music brings different things to different people, that's whats unique about being ur own person and being a individual. u get to choose what is best for u, without having others tell u what u should or should not be doing. be urself, live 4 urself, and fuck everybody else.

atlsweetie, hit me up, so i can see what u r working with.

Ion even have to say much with that. atlsweetie exactly its cool to make club songs hip hop is all about having fun too, but its certain niggas that are embarassing for hip hop in general not just embarassing to the south but just hip hop in general yah mean? That money thing is whats wrong with the industry white ppl buy 80% of the records black ppl buy 6% u see the strange part of that and why beautiful black people of different shades only buy 6%? When Biz Markie made that dumb ass "Just a friend" song at least u knew wtf he was talking about lol. When will smith made corny ass songs he was having fun and you knew wtf he was talking about. When Eminem makes dumb ass songs I mean nobody says he's embarassing...I guess cause he already proved he can be lyrical and comical too. u cant just make a certain genre of hip hop and expect to get praised for it cause what if eminem did that shit.He woulda never got respect. Beastie Boys even got respect and they were versatile.Im pretty sure D4L has other songs thats better than laffy taffy lol and yes that shit BEEN old. All I know is I support ANYBODY if they got talent ya dig?

MAN, EVERYONE WHO HAS WRITTEN A COMMENT ABOUT WHICH COAST OR REGION IS THE HOTTEST MUST HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO. I AGREE WITH A COUPLE OF INDIVIDUALS WHO POSTED THEIR COMMENT EARLIER.
THE GAME IS SO TWISTED NOW. YOU HAVE ALL THESE FAKE ASS RAPPERS OUT THERE WHO ARE RAPPING A FAKE LIFESTYLE AND NOBODY CARES WHAT COAST OR REGION IS HOT B/C WHEN YOUR MUSIC DON'T SALE, YOUR ASS I OUT OF THE MUSIC GAME PERIOD! WHAT MATTERS IS WHETHER YOU'RE HOT OR NOT. NOT WHERE YOUR FROM. MOST OF THE CATS OUT HERE, ANYWAY IS ALL ABOUT WHO HAS THE MOST ICE.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE MUSIC GAME PERIOD! YOU HAVE RAPPERS LIKE WAYNE HOOKING UP W/AVANT, BOBBY V OR TRINA, AND THE HOOKS SOUND SO WACK! OR NELLY HOOKING UP W/SOME COUNTRY MUSIC CAT. ALL I SAY IS THE MUSIC WORLD THESE DAYS: EAST COAST, WEST COAST, MID-WEST, OR SOUTH ARE JUST TRYING TO MAKE A DOLLAR AND ARE WILLING TO MAKE ANY TYPE OF MUSIC TO GET IT AND THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GOOD MUSIC ANYMORE OR THE HOTTEST COAST.

YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THOUGH, A.T.L. IS PRETTY HOT RIGHT NOW AND EVERY PART OF THE COUNTRY WILL HAVE IT'S OWN TIME TO SHINE. HELL! THE DAKOTAS MAY BE NEXT. LOL!

I agree with a couple people in here too and for real it aint about a coast because when I turn on the radio almost EVERY song from EVERY coast is weak.Im watching this shit on BET about music videos twista just said you show a few half naked big booty women in ya video, & people will buy ya album & if u got a lotta ice people will buy ya album. Its not about music anymore its about sex, ice,"bitches",& not about the music. There really aint nothing hot right now so all the hatred aint even called for.

But yeah I feel u but its a lot of niggas hating on the north too. Its all pointless to me thats why I dont really do that coast shit. Everytime I go on some shit which is rarely, I see someone hating on the north and south and sometimes the west. Fuck where everybody from yao ming? That aint important...and yeah hip hop was my whole life growing up and still apart of me except a lot of the music nowadays from 50 cent to D4L. Dem Franchise Boys...Bankhead's Own Finally Step Into The Limelight

Still riding the enormous wave of a their smash single "I Think They Like Me", a remix featuring super-producer Jermaine Dupri and fellow SoSo Def artists Da Brat and Bow Wow, Dem Franchise Boys are preparing to drop their sophmore LP, On Top Of Our Game in early 2006. However, the current year still holds some unfinished business as I caught up with them at their jam-packed video shoot for "Lean Wit It" in the heart of Atlanta.

The popularity of the four Atlanta natives was evident as I approached the video shoot at the Pool Palace, arguably the hottest club in the city, located in Bankhead. I was carefully screened by security and it was immediately apparent that the four Bankhead natives, Buddie, Jizzal Man, Pimpin and Parlae were definitely the toast of Atlanta right now.

I finally caught up with the group on their tour bus during an intermission at the video shoot and we talked about their forthcoming LP, their famous SoSo Def mentor and what it's like to be Dem Franchise Boys right now.

SOHH.COM:
First of all what's good fellas? I know we're fresh off The first annual Dirty Awards and alot of people are criticizing your performance on stage. What happened up there?

Parlae:
Well you know it's like this, shit happens. We had two DJ's going, one on stage and one in the back. We thought the DJ in the back was supposed to be spinning the instrumental so we took him the instrumental but he said he already had it. But, he really had the street version and not the DFB version and we had already took the right version to the DJ up front who thought we was coming with "Lean Wit It" so the beats was on top of each other and shit was just fucked up man. But being the artists we are we just kept going and didn't stop just to keep the show going. We had to keep it professional.

SOHH.COM:
Do you think it was an accident or something done purposely?

Parlae:
There were rumors that the DJ got paid off and that shit got sabotaged or what not, but it aint no telling. We just got to keep it thorough and we can't dwell on the shit, but I'm glad you asked that. The thing is, we number one in the country right now and we clockin 3,500 spins a week, we got on in six months, we got two billboard hits in two years and it's about to be three so shit like that don't faze us. We still gon' keep it pimpin for real.

SOHH.COM
Okay, well switchin lanes for a minute, what's it like to work with the mayor of Atlanta Jermaine Dupri?

Parlae:
This is like a dream come true for all of us to work with the man. I mean he's behind so many hits like Mariah and Usher you know and it's just a blessing and we understand that. He' showing us every side of the industry and the thing about it is he let's us be us. He's cool to be around and we just blessed that he took us under his wing and we just flying with him right now.

Pimpin:
Yeah J is the mayor of Atlanta, and we the hottest thing in Atlanta so we supposed to be together.

SOHH.COM
When I interviewed JD the day Young, Fly and Flashy dropped he pointed out how hard you worked as a group in the studio and how your work ethic was one of the biggest things that impressed him, how do feel about recieving those type of props from him?

Buddie:
Yeah we used to do this rapping shit for a hobby and for fun so when we started getting paid for it you know we was on it. You know what I'm saying, we getting money for something that we love to do and it's legal money too! Enough said.

Parlae:
I mean we try to bang out a song a day. We stay in the booth, myself I recently did eight songs in one day man, that's how hard we at this right now.

SOHH.COM
On that same note, I've talked to several independent artists like Gucci Mane and Maceo in the past who say they love the creative control that they have as independent artists, do you still have that same type of room to create since being signed?

Parlae:
No doubt, and first let me send a shot out to Gucci Mane and his situation. It's funny you mention Maceo because we got a bunch of tracks with Maceo on deck and the whole Quick Flip family. But as far as creativity, if you can't do you then why do it at all? And see that was the thing that we didn't like about Universal when we was with them at first. They tried to change us and they didn't want to let us be us but now with Virgin its like before they even put our name on a shirt they calling us asking for our input like do you want top, bottom, right, or left.

SOHH.COM:
What's the best part about the fame and being on top at the moment?

Parlae:
The fans. Just to see the fans relate to what we saying and understand where we came from to where we at right now is the best part. It's good when you know people listening to you and understand that what you saying is important enough to be heard, that's big.

Jizzal Man:
We trendsetters, everybody looking at Dem Franchise Boys as trendsetters. We drop " White Tee", they drop "Black Tee", then we drop "I Think They Like Me" then they drop "Betcha Can't Do It Like Me" I mean damn. Now we droppin Lean Wit It and I bet cats follow-up on that shit. We trendsetters, only the great one's can be trendsetters. It's all flattery to us.

SOHH.COM:
What artists have been influential to you as a group before you got signed?

Buddie:
We been influenced by every artist that came up out of Atlanta, especially the real street niggas who made something out of nothing. And we aint talking about these fake niggas claimin hoods that they aint never stepped in. Don't think we don't see you.

SOHH.COM:
Finally, what's next on the agenda for Dem Franchise Boys in 2006?

Parlae:
The album drops on February 7, 2006. We got a bunch of artists on there. We got Jim Jones, Trey Songz, the whole SoSo Def family, and our group Ten Entertainment. And see folks know who we is but they really haven't got a chance to really find out what we about so we just going to continue to give back to the people cause that's why we here.

To your above statement not many of the so called ATL artists are actually from ATL i.e. Big Boi from Savannah GA, Jazzy Pha from Memphis, Pastor Troy from Augusta, T.I. from Cobb County, Ludacris from Illinois, Ciara from TX, Gucci Mane from Alabama, Young Jeezy from Macon GA, Usher from Tennesee, and the list goes on and on. So talk about the franchise boys cause dey wack not cause they was born in some other city. Bytch get cha mind right.

Listen Up!!! Rap is not real!! Hate to be the one to tell you! If the franchise boyz aint from atlanta oh well. I dont buy music because of where people from anyway!
I dont like Francise boys but somebody does and thats ok. Id lie on a record like everybody else for a check. I lie on my resume to get a check. just like the white people! I lie on my income tax to get a bigger return am i wrong? The white people showed me how! I use the word nigger when i see a black man hell white people do it. Stop putting so much emphasis on what people do in entertainment, I sold drugs on the street for sex years and I want to make a cd about it. I robbed my mothers boyfriend and shot his car windows out with him in it! Am I wrong? Yes cause i should have rapped about it over a beat and got paid. Instead I earn 60,000 a year sitting at home typing on a computer 12 hours a day. Not bad for an excon. Imade a 28 on my ACT though!!

THIS IS FOR ALL OF YOU THAT CONTINUOUSLY USE THE WORD "NIGGA"

THIS IS A HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION:

BLACKMAN, you just have to face the facts. Not all, but a good majority of black people are just down right ignorant and not only do they know they are ignorant but they are proud of their ignorance. For those blacks who think outside the box and actually question what is going on, you are looked at as if their is something wrong with you.

Posted by: Lawrence at December 22, 2005 01:49 PM

Any black man or woman with enough sense must cut themselves off from the ghetto mentality in order to have any chance at making something of themselves because failure to do so means you will wind up like those poor bamas down in New Orleans.

It's kinda like that South Park episode where they parodied the "Day After Tomorrow" with those legislators saying "robble robble robble....peas and carrots, peas and carrots" like they were sayin something when they weren't. Just like most of you guys. Hey, don't get mad...just a brotha here with his own opinion. If you really mad, just take it out on uber-nigga Blackman and do your personal interpretation of a cocaine-era Richard Pryor (R.I.P.) stand-up routine. Good day to you all.

Favorite Spot: Cumberland Mall, Capozzi's

Marietta is a very large city north of ATL. For shopping the best spot is DTLR in Cumberland Mall, Jazzy Pha, Cee lo, Bobby Valentino, Bonecrusher, even Jadakiss have been known to shop in that Mall.

Bars would have to be Montanas, Here and Liquid Lounge Billards. A kinda funny site is the Big Chicken where Julia Roberts used to work, It's a very big wooden chicken, about 2 stories high and is one top a KFC in Downtown Marietta.

Best pizza spot would be Capozzi's. DJ Southernbreed usually throws the tightest partys in the Marriot or the Red Train.

News:

Critics rap Atlanta's hip-hop anthem

By Jenny Jarvie
Tribune Newspapers: Los Angeles Times
Published December 16, 2005

ATLANTA -- When Dick Williams heard his city's new anthem, he was aghast. The 60-year-old local Fox television host, who sings for his local choir, could understand only one line: "Get 'em up, get 'em up, get 'em up, get 'em up, get 'em up, let's go . . . "

"Not," he said, "a good line for a city with a high crime rate."

Now that Atlanta is the first city in the United States to have an official hip-hop anthem, residents are wondering about the meaning of the song.

Mayor Shirley Franklin commissioned Dallas Austin, a hip-hop producer based in Atlanta, to write the anthem as part of her Brand Atlanta campaign to attract tourists and businesses.

Yet ever since "The ATL"--an up-tempo hip-hop and R&B fusion song--debuted in front of 70,000 football fans at an Atlanta Falcons game in October, Atlanta's residents have critiqued its rhythm, melody and lyrics.

One suburban reader of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution complained that the song told the world to "bring your boom-box and your bling-bling to Atlanta." Another said he could no longer identify with a city that had abandoned family values in favor of "gun-blazing, Ray Lewis-admiring thugs."

Sarah Lattimer, a partner of LattimerMoffitt Communications, the marketing company that conceived of the idea of an Atlanta anthem, admits she was shocked by the critical interpretations of the song.

Lyrics interpreted

"`Get 'em up' is a club reference," she said. "In a dance club, people throw their hands in the air."

Lattimer said "The ATL" articulates the soul of Atlanta. She expects the song, which is performed by contemporary R&B artists, including Monica, Ciara, Jagged Edge, Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins of TLC and Sammie, to enter the Billboard Top 40 and become part of the repertoire of Atlanta's high school bands, symphony orchestra and nightclubs.

"The ATL" underlines the difficulty of defining Atlanta, the bustling, entrepreneurial capital of the New South. Although almost everyone here agrees the city has moved past "Gone With the Wind," tensions linger when it comes to shaping an identity that can unite urban and suburban, black and white, young and old.

Atlanta has a reputation as progressive, but there is still a schism between the predominantly black city and the predominantly white metropolitan region. According to the 2000 census, the city of Atlanta is 61 percent black; the wider metropolitan area is 29 percent black.

In the last decade, Atlanta's hip-hop scene has flourished, inviting comparisons with Detroit's Motown and Harlem's jazz. OutKast, Usher, Ludacris and Jermaine Dupri are some of the Atlanta artists notching platinum records and Grammy awards.

Local unawareness

Still, many Atlanta residents are unaware that their city has become a hip-hop hub and that artists based in Atlanta--Young Jeezy, Dem Franchise Boyz, Trina and D4L--have dominated recent Billboard rap charts.

Austin, who wrote "The ATL" but declined to be interviewed for this article, has worked with artists as diverse as TLC, Gwen Stefani, Madonna, Boyz II Men and Aretha Franklin.

Yet, in a sense, hip-hop's presence in Atlanta is underground: It is played in basements, recording studios, strip clubs and night clubs in the south of the city.

Dupri is Atlanta's most successful hip-hop producer and has worked with Usher, Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson. The Grammy winner and a founder of So So Def Records said the city lacks awareness of the local hip-hop industry.

"Atlanta is a music mecca, but you don't feel it," he said. "When you go to Nashville, the city sounds like country music. When you come to Atlanta--when you arrive at Hartsfield airport-- you don't hear the hip-hop."

Dupri, who recently signed a deal with EMI Virgin Records estimated to be worth $20 million, said hip-hop could be lucrative for Atlanta.

Earlier this year, a Georgia State University report estimated that the annual economic impact of Georgia's commercial music scene, which is concentrated in Atlanta, is close to $1 billion.

Yet many Atlantans scoff at the notion that the commercial success of Atlanta's hip-hop industry could translate into a broader business plan for the city.

Williams, the Fox TV host, said he thinks that promoting Atlanta's hip-hop culture will deter businesses and conventions from coming to the city.

"The city's decision to choose a black anthem is not smart marketing," he said.

Former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr, who wrote a local newspaper editorial criticizing the "unintelligible moaning" of "The ATL," said many suburbanites worry that Atlanta's city leaders are reluctant to embrace a broader audience. "There's a sense that the city's too parochial, that it is only looking out for the city of Atlanta," he said.

D4L Hit The "Candy Shop,"

Respectively following at No. 20 is Atlanta rap group-D4L. Their Atlantic Records offering Down 4 Life has certainly created a buzz for itself worldwide. Their first single, "Laffy Taffy" started out as an ATL classic, and has moved its way up the East Coast. After its first week, D4L sold 36,603 copies.

Atlanta rap group D4L worked extra hard on new album.

All Hip Hop Feature:

D4L: Candyshop
By Poet

By now you might have heard yourself humming - if not, flat out singing - the chart-climbing song by D4L, “Laffy Taffy”. The metaphoric reference is a favorite – but is it a bit push-pop? D4L frontman, Mookie B has his own opinions.

The rapper chimed in with AllHipHop.com to discuss the little known, but lengthy career of the group. From the affects of the single, to project housing, to the Down 4 Life movement… Mookie B is no airhead. Get with it, and get a closer look at a different side of Atlanta.

AllHipHop.com: So really, what does D4L stand for?

Mook B: D4L means Down For Life, which is basically the promise we gave to each other. We have been at this for more then a minute. We’ve seen groups come out, put out an album and break up all in one year – [and] sometimes faster than that. And unlike most groups, D4L is a movement.

AllHipHop.com: The Diplomats are a movement; G-Unit is a movement – explain…

Mook B: We all from different projects, not to mention projects that ain’t get along. How fly is it that we took a major negative and turned it into a positive. How many people can say they got warring projects to come together? People that would normally not speak unless it was top throw disrespect showing each other love. It ain’t all peaches but it is a start.

AllHipHop.com: Did you think “Laffy Taffy” would be the song that gave you national recognition?

Mook B: Yeah, because we knew God had something big planned for us. He led, we followed. We just needed to be patient. Quick and easy ain’t always the best way to get to where you want to be.

AllHipHop.com: Some may look at “Laffy Taffy” as a one-hit-wonder. It’s not your average song on the radio and fans can be fickle to say the least.

Mook B: Since we put God first, we not even worried about that, one-hit-wonder junk. We know this is our time, and we plan to use it wisely. We have a name for haters; we call them cheerleaders, because they are cheering us on to where we know we’re going to be anyway. How can we be a one-hit-wonder when we’ve crossed over to Pop?

AllHipHop.com: Why “Laffy Taffy?”

Mook B: We wanted to put out something sweet for the ladies. There are already enough songs calling them b*tches and hoes. we wanted to give then something different - something they could dance to. Plus, who don’t like something sweet every once and a while?

AllHipHop.com: How long did it take you to come up with the concept of the song?

Mook B: Man, I forget where we was, but Fabo sang this hook, and we was all like, “That could work.” We hit the studio and the song was recorded in 30 minutes. We grinded it out and made it happen.

AllHipHop.com: Is this the signature sound of D4L? Or does your music expand past that?

Mook B: We make universal music, baby. We’ve lived the street life. There are enough gangsta songs and albums out there for everybody. We making music that everybody can get down to. You want your moms, sisters, cousins, man, just everybody to be able to enjoy the music. We trying to hit all faces and all races.

AllHipHop.com: Hip-Hop is party music through and through. Do you label yourselves as Hip-Hop?

Mook B: Hip-Hop is a way of life. An expression and you should be free to express yourself however you want to. If more artists stop trying to divide music, and tried more to bridge the gap, I think it could bring people together. We made history in ATL; we were the first group to break 1,000 spins on the radio without a record deal.

AllHipHop.com: From that, on into today’s success, how has your life changed?

Mook B: Our families are really proud of us. Our mothers ain’t been proud of us in a long time. The streets call you when you don’t have anything better. And a lot of times when the streets call, the people come running. Yeah, you may be bringing money into the household, but how proud is your moms really when you had to destroy x many people to get it? It feels good to all of us to give back in a positive way.

AllHipHop.com: Do you think you’re role models?

Mook B: Hell yeah! You feel the pressure the minute you walk into a spot and people are singing your song, or telling you how much they like or appreciate your music. D4L wants people to see that no matter how bad it is, you can make it. Yeah we trying to get money. But we’re dreaming bigger then that. We don’t want any beefs, we want to live.

AllHipHop.com: Speaking of beefs…there was the situation with Dem Franchise Boyz…

Mook B: I’m glad you asked that. It’s been reported by people that we were taking claim for their success. I used to manage Franchise. I helped then when they were first getting on. I got they song to Coco Brother and that’s how “White Tee” got on the radio. D4L studio engineered and recorded the song, that was our part in the situation and that’s it. I wish them nothing but continued success. I’m proud of them.

AllHipHop.com: Another ATL group putting it down, right?

Mook B: Yeah. What most people don’t know and I ain’t trying to take nothing away from any other down south artist. We from the projects! Some rappers from Atlanta, true are from Atlanta, but they not from the projects.

AllHipHop.com: Like who?

Mook B: Like T.I. - much respect, is from around the projects. Like many artists, they may claim Atlanta or some city, and make millions. But we are one of few groups to make a way not only out of just one Atlanta project, but four different projects, and I think that’s saying something. People forget we been doing this for a long time.

AllHipHop.com: What can we expect on Down For Life?

Mook B: We got Too Short, much love to him for showing real love and not being fake. People promise you anything when they in front of the cameras or a crowd, but it be totally different when you trying to get them in the studio. Busta Rhymes [is on the] “Laffy Taffy Remix.” Besides that, everything is in house production. We did this all on our own. With a very small budget mind you. Even in that sense we’re saying something to all those labels out there. It ain’t about the money; it’s about the product an artist gives to his people.

AllHipHop.com: Where would you like to see the D4L movement in… let’s say four or five years?

Mook B: Everywhere…touching a little bit of everything. We wanna be like AllHipHop.com…always being real to Hip-Hop, and the people that live this music. Men, women, children. We want to touch generations and cultures for life. Man, if we can’t tell people anything else. We want them to know they are only one hit away from whatever you trying to do. Broaden your mind, put God first, and the rest will come. We living that plan, right now.
